It’s early days, but I won’t rule out contesting to become NDC’s flagbearer—Asiedu Nketia

Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Asiedu Nketia, has explained that he will not rule out his intentions to contest for the flagbearership slot in the governing political party.

He says no serious politician rules out any position because ambition drives politics.

To him, if you rush to rule things out as a politician, it will get to a point where you’ll be at a corner where you’ll regret having ruled out certain positions.

“I never dreamt of going to parliament. I was a trained business guy; I started as a marketing manager, stockbroker, and bank manager. The thought of going to parliament never crossed my mind until pressure started mounting from my own people that you have to represent our community, and you say you’ll do it for one year and then go and do something else, and everybody says, you have done it so well that without you we can’t get a good replacement so continue, and that is why some of us found ourself here as the National Chairman of a political party.

He added while speaking on Accra-based Joy News that, “I never planned to go to Parliament. I chose a different career path, but circumstances drew me to become a member of parliament, and even as a member of parliament, I never thought of becoming a general secretary.

So as a member of parliament, if I had held a press conference and said I will never be a general secretary in my life, it could have been a hindrance at the point where there was pressure for me to be general secretary, and even as general secretary, it was not in my plan to become national chairman, but circumstances again pushed me to become national chairman. So you don’t rule out any other position. Today, if you ask me if I want to be the General Secretary of the United Nations, I will say Why not. It is a possibility so that is why I don’t think it is prudent for politicians to be ruling out positions”.

However, he indicated that it is too early in the day for a party in power to have people declaring their intention to run for the flagbearer slot.

General Mosquito, as he is affectionately called, explained that they have a mandate to the people of Ghana, and an early declaration of intent by any of the persons in government will paint an absurd picture and may bring about tension in the government.

To him, it will be disrespectful to the Ghanaians who voted for them to be thinking about the next election when there is a mandate to fulfill to make their lives better.
