It’s normal to receive slaps in a tense electoral environment—Mustapha Gbande

Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has stated that it is normal for a journalist to receive slaps during an election.

He says, so far as the country has failed to deal with the minority leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, he sees nothing wrong with the journalist receiving slaps in such a tense environment.

Mustapha Gbande noted that these are normal for the times and will be addressed after the election.

“This is not the first time, the Minority Leader, Afenyo Markin, slapped a police officer recently. Nothing has happened yet, so that is why another thing will happen. So when we finish the election all of these matters will be addressed.

He continued, “These are hazards of the environment, so we take responsibility for it that a police officer will do that. But if you are in an election, no matter what comes, there will be scratches, and so these ones are normal for the season”.

19 polling stations in Ablekuma North is today, July 11, 2025, going to the polls to elect a Member of Parliament.

The election is between Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie of the New Patriotic Party and Ewurabena Aubynn of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The constituency has not had a representative in Parliament after the December 7 election due to the failure of the Electoral Commission to collate the votes and declare a winner.

After several months of back and forth, the Election Management Body, after telling Parliament that they were left with 3 polling stations to collate, announced that there would be a rerun of 19 polling stations.

Although the New Patriotic Party (NPP) decided against contesting in the rerun, the decision by the High Court to dismiss their injunction application has forced the political party to join the rerun.

The governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) is optimistic that it will win the election because they have performed marvelously in the last six months of being in power and resetting Ghana.

But Akua Afriyie, who is contesting for the New Patriotic Party, believes she won on December 7 and will win on July 11.

Before the election, the Electoral Commission announced that the NPP’s Akua Afriyie leads with 48 votes. In all, 6,836 voters are expected to cast their ballot on July 11, 2025, in the 19 polling stations.

Here is the list of the 19 polling stations:
