It’s not a new venture – Ex-Ghana Water boss clears air on bottled water plans

Contrary to recent claims suggesting Ghana Water Limited (GWL) is only now venturing into bottled water production, the company began this initiative as far back as 2018 under the Akufo-Addo administration.

Former Managing Director of GWL, Mr. Clifford Braimah, has clarified that the state utility established a subsidiary, G-Water Limited, in 2018 after restructuring its mandate to include packaged water production.

According to him, the Kpong-based facility initially produced 3,000 bottles per hour, later increasing to 6,000—with plans to reach 12,000.

Mr. Braimah, who oversaw the project’s early implementation, described current MD Adam Mutawakilu’s comments about entering the bottled water space as “misleading,” adding, “At best, he should say he’s expanding a project he inherited.”

The idea stemmed from earlier discussions following the 2013 merger of Ghana Water Company Limited and Ghana Urban Water Limited, which created a more streamlined utility service.

As of June 2024, GWL operates 84 water systems across Ghana—61 surface and 23 groundwater—serving approximately 14 million people through 103 district offices.

The company’s daily production stands at 950,995 cubic meters against a national demand of over 1.1 million cubic meters.
