It’s time to limit direct appointments made by the president

Chairman of Ghana’s Constitutional Amendment Committee, Prof. H. Kwasi Prempeh is of the view that when a President is vested with power to make too many appointments, quality control, including due diligence and oversight, both in the appointment phase and post-appointment performance monitoring, is bound to suffer.
He is of the view that there is a need to limit the number of direct appointments a president can make.
Adding that there should be clear meritocratic criteria and qualifications for certain appointments.
His comments, shared via Facebook, were in reaction to Dr Steve Manteaw’s position that some recent appointments by the president do not make the cut and may lead to him losing his goodwill.
“When a President is vested with power to make too many appointments, quality control, including due diligence and oversight, both in the appointment phase and post-appointment performance monitoring, is bound to suffer. The ultimate solution is to limit the number of direct appointments a president can make, including by defining clear meritocratic criteria and qualifications for certain appointments,” he said.
