I’ve been vindicated by Interior Minister’s findings – Hawa Koomson breaks silence

Former Member of Parliament and Minister, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has expressed relief following the Interior Minister’s recent revelations on the Kasoa shooting incident, describing the findings as vindication after years of public criticism.

Speaking in a statement released on Thursday, November 6, she said the report by Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak confirmed that “21 suspects have been identified, that there were clear breaches of discipline by some security officers, and that the use of firearms in certain situations was unjustified.”

“These findings affirm what I have consistently maintained,” she said, “that the Kasoa incident was the result of security lapses and institutional failures, not the actions or instigation of any individual.”

Hawa Koomson recounted the difficult period she endured after the incident, noting that she was “branded violent, reckless, and unfit for office through sensational and misleading headlines.” She added that “the Interior Minister’s findings have vindicated me, confirming that the violence was not directed by me but stemmed from broader systemic failures in election security coordination.”

While expressing no pleasure in revisiting the events, she extended sympathy to families affected by electoral violence, saying their loss “must be our national lesson.”

She also endorsed the Interior Minister’s recommendations for better police training, non-lethal crowd control tools, and the discontinuation of military involvement in election security.
