Ivory Coast Confirms It Has Sheltered 13,325 Ghanaian Refugees

The government of Ivory Coast has confirmed to Ghana’s Interior Minister, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, confirmed that 13,253 Ghanaians are now refugees in their territory.
These Ghanaians were displaced by the Gbinyiri land dispute and are currently sheltering in Côte d’Ivoire.
Confirming the development to told Joy FM on Thursday, September 4, 2025, Muntaka Mubarak said the clashes have displaced people across four regions, including Upper West and Savannah, with many fleeing across the border.
Muntaka said government, local assemblies, and partners such as the UNHCR are supporting victims, while expressing gratitude to the Ivorian authorities. He also praised the security services for helping to restore calm.
The minister disclosed that government is working with traditional leaders and the National Peace Council to restore order. A meeting between the Gonjaland leadership, the Peace Council and the Yagbonwura was held Thursday morning.
He noted that a formal committee will be established by Monday to investigate the incident and recommend measures to prevent a recurrence.
According to him, the situation must be resolved urgently so that displaced farmers and herders can return before the farming season. “Many of them left their animals and crops. If we don’t resolve this quickly, it will lead to food insecurity,” he warned.
Muntaka assured that government is working tirelessly with all stakeholders to ensure peace returns to the Gbinyiri area and surrounding communities.
