Jean Mensa’s exit key to party’s reset Agenda

Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, is not mincing words about the future of the Electoral Commission’s (EC) leadership following the party’s victory in the 2024 general elections.

In a bold statement during an interview on Radio Gold, Mr. Asiedu Nketia insisted on the removal of the EC’s top officials, stating emphatically that the NDC’s win does not absolve the Commission of past actions.

“I am the one who started the whole conversation about the removal of high-ranking officers at various state institutions, including the Auditor General, the Electoral Commission, among others,” he said.

He went further, openly criticizing the Chairperson of the EC, Mrs. Jean Mensa, and calling for her dismissal, alongside her deputies.

“The fact that the NDC won the 2024 election does not turn the EC Chair, Mrs. Jean Mensa, into an angel. Left with me alone, she should be removed together with the entire leadership of the Electoral Commission.”

Mrs. Jean Mensa, a barrister and respected voice in Ghana’s democratic space, has chaired the EC since 2018.

She is supported by two deputies: Dr. Bossman Eric Asare, former Head of the Political Science Department at the University of Ghana and now Deputy Commissioner in charge of Corporate Services; and Mr. Samuel Tettey, Deputy Commissioner in charge of Operations, who has decades of experience within the Commission, including leading the Electoral Services Division.

Despite the NDC’s triumph at the polls, Mr. Asiedu Nketia appears to be setting the tone for what he describes as a “reset agenda,” which includes sweeping changes across key institutions, starting with the Electoral Commission.

The call raises questions about the future of Ghana’s electoral leadership and the political direction the NDC intends to take as it settles into governance.
