Jinapor announces $227m contract cancellations at ECG

Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has announced a sweeping cancellation of contracts by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in a bid to sanitize the power sector and ensure value for money.

Mr. Jinapor disclosed, “The ECG Board has approved the outright termination of over 202 of these contracts. The total values of these contracts are estimated at $227 million, 1.17 million pounds, and 4.08 million Euros.”

He emphasized that the move forms part of a broader initiative to uphold transparency and accountability within the sector. “We are determined to ensure that we clean up the sector,” he said during the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, July 16, 2025.

According to the Minister, the termination decision was driven by a commitment to proper procurement practices and efficient use of resources. “We are achieving better results with value for money and ensuring that we adhere to strict procurement processes,” Mr. Jinapor added.

The terminated contracts reportedly covered various service provisions and projects under ECG that were found to be either unproductive, improperly procured, or financially burdensome.
