Jinapor calls for committee to track Missing ECG Assets

Energy and Green Transition Minister, John Abdulai Jinapor, has called for the establishment of a three-member committee to investigate the disappearance of Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) containers at the Tema Port.
According to the minister, the committee’s primary task will be to meticulously trace the serial numbers of the missing containers to determine their final destination and uncover those responsible for their disappearance.
“The primary responsibility of the committee would be to meticulously track the serial numbers of the missing containers,” he stated.
Jinapor emphasized that such valuable assets, especially those containing essential equipment like electricity cables, should not be auctioned off or repurposed in ways that compromise their intended use. Instead, he suggested that the state should take control of these resources and channel them into rural electrification projects.
“By tracing these serial numbers, the aim is to determine the final destination of each missing container and identify all parties involved in their disappearance,” he added.
Beyond tracking the containers, Jinapor stressed the need for a structured payment plan that would allow the government to utilize any recovered and secured items for ongoing electrification efforts, reducing the necessity for new contracts.
The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to resolving the issue and implementing reforms within the energy sector to prevent such occurrences in the future.
Additionally, he disclosed that he is seeking legal clarification from the Attorney General regarding the ownership and autonomy of state-owned enterprises like ECG in handling such situations.
