Jinapor outlines steps to address state-owned container theft

In light of recent media reports surrounding the theft of state-owned containers, John Jinapor, the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, has outlined steps being taken to address the issue and ensure accountability.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show, Jinapor acknowledged concerns about potential evidence tampering while emphasizing the need for action.

“The solution for me is to track the containers using their serial numbers. Whether somebody’s stolen them or not, the system should show where the containers eventually ended up,” Jinapor explained. This approach, he believes, will allow for better tracking and resolution of the case.

In an open letter, Jinapor affirmed that National Security had already secured the containers. “The letter is an official, open letter—not a top-secret document—and you can check from the records that National Security has secured these containers,” he said. His confidence in the handling of the situation was clear, as he mentioned plans for further steps to recover stolen assets.

Jinapor also noted his decision to involve the relevant authorities in the investigation, emphasizing the importance of accountability.

“I’ve written formally to the Attorney-General to commence criminal investigations into the matter. I’m sure that the Attorney General will take that up. I’ve also written to the NIB to commence investigations so we can treat the whole batch of 1,300 containers,” he stated.

The minister stressed the importance of prosecuting the individuals responsible, highlighting the government’s commitment to recovering state property.

“When we start prosecuting these people, let no one say that this is witch-hunting. These are properties of the state, and we will use every legitimate means to ensure that we retrieve them,” he added.

Finally, Jinapor called for the remaining containers to be secured swiftly, reiterating the urgency of the matter.

“I’ve also written to National Security to secure about 706 containers. I would wish that they secure the remainder of the containers. So, we’ll do a proper stocktaking, and then we can take it from there. The earlier we secure the remaining ones, the better,” he concluded.
