Jubilation as Michael Allotey takes over as Accra Mayor

Michael Kpakpo Allotey has been confirmed as the Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) following a unanimous vote by Assembly Members during a Special General Assembly Meeting held on Tuesday at the Accra City Hall.

Mr Allotey secured all 30 valid votes cast in an election conducted by the Electoral Commission, achieving a 100 percent endorsement—well above the two-thirds majority required under Section 20 of the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936).

The result was met with cheers, drumming and dancing as government appointees, party executives, traditional leaders, and residents joined Assembly Members in celebrating what many hailed as a vote of confidence and unity.

Supervising the process, Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo commended the Assembly Members for their decision and urged them to continue supporting the nominee beyond confirmation.

She called on them to rise above partisanship and uphold their constitutional responsibilities, noting that the capital city demands committed leadership.

In his acceptance speech, Mr Allotey thanked President John Dramani Mahama for the opportunity to serve, describing it as a humbling responsibility.

“I thank the President for entrusting me, a young man from North Kaneshie, with this responsibility. It is an honour I do not take lightly,” he said.

Reflecting on the work done by his predecessors, Mr Allotey pledged to build on their legacy while introducing fresh energy to transform the city.

“I now hold the baton as Mayor of Accra. My predecessor has done her part, but today, it’s my turn. If I have any misunderstandings, I can seek advice from the many who have come before me, so there is no window for failure,” he added.

He echoed President Mahama’s vision for development, declaring, “We are going to reset Accra—starting now.” He concluded with a faith-filled message: “What God cannot do does not exist.”

Nene Drolor Bosso Adamtey I, a member of the Council of State and Chairman of the Economic and Social Development Committee, urged the new Mayor to lead with foresight, empathy, and discipline. He identified sanitation, urban congestion, housing, youth unemployment, and social equity as urgent challenges that demand bold and innovative solutions.

Mr Allotey comes into office with over a decade of experience in the private sector, including roles in real estate, petroleum, and logistics. He served as CEO of Our God Is Good Real Estate, where he contributed to infrastructure expansion and job creation. He has also held managerial roles at KYG Consultancy, EXOLUBE Company Ltd, and DIMD Ghana, where he was credited with reducing operational costs through strategic reforms.

Within the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Allotey has held several leadership roles, including Director of Operations in the Okaikwei South Constituency.
