Junior doctors announce nationwide withdrawal of services over unpaid salaries

The Junior Doctors’ Association of Ghana (JDA-GH) has declared a nationwide withdrawal of services in protest of what it describes as months of neglect and unfair treatment of its members.
In a statement dated October 2, 2025, the association revealed that over 200 junior doctors have been working without pay for 10 to 14 months, while several others who were previously on payroll have had their salaries stopped without explanation.
It also highlighted that more than 800 medical officers have been awaiting posting for over a year.
“Despite repeated engagements with authorities and good-will shown towards the government, no solutions have been offered,” the statement read.
The association has directed its members to suspend outpatient services from Tuesday, October 7, to Thursday, October 9, 2025.
In addition, emergency services will be withdrawn effective Friday, October 10, until further notice.
“Inpatients will continue to be managed until discharge, but no new cases will be admitted,” the association stressed.
Making their stance clear, the JDA stated; “The continued exploitation of junior doctors will no longer be tolerated.
The responsibility for any disruption of healthcare services lies squarely with the Ministry of Health and the Government of Ghana.”
