Justice was compromised for political gain – Martin Amidu alleges

Former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu has raised strong concerns about what he describes as blatant political interference and favoritism in the discontinuation of a high-profile financial crime case involving former Finance Minister Dr. Kwabena Duffuor and others.

In an open letter, Amidu described Dr. Duffuor as a long-time political associate of both President John Mahama and current Attorney-General Dominic Ayine.

He pointed out that Duffuor, who served under the Mills-Mahama administration, also contested in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential primaries ahead of the 2024 elections, only to drop out before voting began.

Amidu also questioned the recent appointment of Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama—another former accused person in the same case—as Governor of the Bank of Ghana.

He revealed that the case against Asiama was officially withdrawn from court on 29 January 2025, just two days before his appointment was announced by President Mahama.“The case was withdrawn from the trial High Court… to pave the way for his appointment as Governor,” Amidu wrote.

He characterized the July 22, 2025, decision to enter a nolle prosequi and end the case altogether as an abuse of prosecutorial power to protect political allies.

For Amidu, the sequence of events raises troubling questions about the independence of the justice system and the potential politicization of legal processes under the current NDC administration.
