Kasoa fake doctor granted GH¢100,000 bail after defrauding victims

An Accra Circuit Court has granted bail in the sum of GH¢100,000 to Frederick Papa Kow-Assifuah, a 30-year-old trader accused of posing as a medical doctor and defrauding several individuals.
The bail comes with two sureties, both of whom must justify the amount with landed property. The title documents for these properties are to be deposited at the Court’s Registry.
Kow-Assifuah, a resident of Kasoa Crispo City in the Central Region, has been charged with falsely assuming the title of “Doctor” and practicing medicine without the required certification.
He also faces multiple counts of defrauding by false pretenses. He pleaded not guilty to the charges and is expected to reappear in court on June 25, 2025.
Presenting the facts, Chief Inspector Wisdom Alorwu identified the main complainants as Madam Genevieve Appau Tete, Madam Sandra Boateng, and Madam Sandra Ewuradwoa Arhin.
According to the prosecution, the National Police Intelligence Directorate received reports that Kow-Assifuah was impersonating a medical doctor online to lure unsuspecting women into romantic relationships.
He allegedly used these relationships to defraud his victims by promising to secure them travel documents.
On June 6, 2025, around 3:30 p.m., Kow-Assifuah was arrested at his residence in Kasoa Crispo City after arranging to meet another potential victim.
At the time of his arrest, he was wearing a white lab coat with a stethoscope around his neck, further supporting his fake medical persona.
A search of his home led to the discovery of various medical items, including three drips, five syringes, two sample bottles, a pair of scissors, a plaster, and five vials of canine distemper adenovirus type 2 parainfluenza parvovirus vaccines. Investigators also found a Ghanaian passport belonging to Madam Tete and an amount of GH¢8,500 in cash.
Under interrogation, Kow-Assifuah admitted to collecting money from the complainants under false pretenses.
He allegedly took GH¢8,500, GH¢25,000, and GH¢2,000 from Mesdames Tete, Boateng, and Arhin, respectively, promising to secure them travel visas to Europe and America, which he failed to deliver.
Further investigations revealed that he also defrauded Mr. Bernard Ameyaw of GH¢18,500 and Madam Elizabeth Dadzie of GH¢1,500, both under similar pretenses of helping them obtain visas to France.
Kow-Assifuah has been charged and arraigned, with police continuing investigations into the full extent of his activities.
