Killer of UEW Science Professor caged

The prime suspect in the murder of Professor Mawuadem Amedeker, a senior lecturer at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), has been remanded into police custody by the Winneba Magistrate Court.

Joshua Karry Arthur was arrested on May 22 at the late professor’s residence in Gyahadze, Effutu Municipality, following weeks of concern over the lecturer’s unexplained disappearance.

What began as a missing person’s case quickly turned tragic when police uncovered Prof. Amedeker’s body buried just metres from his home. The remains have since been transferred to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital mortuary in Winneba for autopsy.

Police say several personal items believed to belong to the deceased were recovered at the scene, including a laptop, two Samsung smartphones, a 50-inch television, and a Toyota Fortuner car key.

The discovery has left the Gyahadze community in shock. In response, the Effutu Divisional Police Command has increased security presence in the area to maintain calm.

According to Divisional Commander ACP Ibrahim Opoku, authorities began their investigation on May 21 after receiving a missing persons report. A young man, initially questioned during the search, later disappeared—leading officers back to the professor’s home, where the body was eventually found.

Investigations remain ongoing as police work to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the murder.
