Killings are attempts to derail mediation – Mahama speaks on Bawku conflict

President John Dramani Mahama has issued a firm warning to those fueling unrest in Bawku, declaring that the ongoing violence can only be the work of individuals determined to undermine peace efforts.
“The current fighting and killings can only be done by people who want to derail the mediation efforts,” he stated. “And so let’s give peace a chance.”
In a significant shift in approach, President Mahama revealed that the military has been directed to move from peacekeeping to peace enforcement.
“That means they are going to be a bit more robust with anybody who is involved in criminality,” he warned.
But his message extended beyond Bawku. Mahama appealed to other conflict-prone communities, including Nkwanta, to also prioritize peace and harmony.
“The values of unity, patriotism, and compassion are more urgent than ever. We must resist the forces of division and exclusion that undermine our shared heritage,” he emphasized.
Citing Gonjaland’s example of diversity and coexistence, Mahama urged all Ghanaians to foster inclusivity. “Let us see each other as each other’s keeper, and let us open opportunities in Savannah to everyone in Savannah, no matter your language or your culture,” he said.
