On Thursday, 24th April, 2025, His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama, in Accra, unveiled the Free Sanitary Pads Initiative to address menstrual barriers to education and empower girls across Ghana.
The Honorable Member of Parliament for Kintampo North, Mr. Joseph Kwame Kumah who doubles as the Vice Chairman of the Education Committee of Parliament in an interview with Peace News applauded the government for this groundbreaking initiative. He highlighted the significant impact of menstrual health on girls’ education, noting that many miss academic activities due to the lack of affordable sanitary products. He added that this initiative aims to reduce absenteeism and support girls in their educational pursuits while addressing broader issues of gender equality and economic hardship. “Many families struggle to afford these products, and alleviating this financial burden represents a crucial investment in the future of young women” he stated.
Honorable Kumah shared his excitement about the initiative during its launch, noting the palpable joy among the young ladies present. He remarked that while some initially viewed it as a campaign promise, HE John Dramani Mahama has made it a reality, which will greatly aid the education of the girl child in Ghana.
He further stated emphatically, as the Vice Chairman of the Education Committee in parliament, the initiative also plans to promote better health and hygiene awareness through educational campaigns to destigmatize menstruation and empower girls with knowledge about their bodies.
His advocacy reflects a commitment to creating a supportive educational environment that contributes to the well-being and development of the nation.
