Kofi Adams urges calm over Nigerian boxer’s death

Ghana’s Sports and Recreation Minister, Kofi Adams, has called for calm following the tragic death of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju.

The boxer passed away after an intense light-heavyweight bout against Ghanaian opponent Jonathan Mbanugu on Saturday, March 29, 2025, sparking concerns about potential tensions between the two nations’ sporting fraternities.

Speaking in an interview on Sporty FM, Kofi Adams was firm in his stance, emphasizing that the incident was not an attack.

“The death of Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju was not caused by any Ghanaian. It was not an attack. So I don’t expect Nigerians to attack any Ghanaian boxer who goes there,” he stated.

Despite the tragedy, Adams remains optimistic about maintaining strong ties between Ghana and Nigeria in the boxing world.

He urged both nations to uphold the spirit of sportsmanship and solidarity, stressing that such unfortunate incidents should not lead to hostility.

With Ghanaian boxers preparing for future events in Nigeria, the minister’s appeal is seen as a crucial step in preventing unnecessary tensions between the two boxing communities.
