KPIs to guide Ghana’s diplomacy – Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang

Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has hailed the government’s bold step to strengthen the country’s foreign policy direction through the introduction of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for Ghana’s missions abroad.
Speaking after participating in the Conference for Heads of Missions and Orientation for newly appointed envoys, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang emphasized that the initiative signals a new era of accountability and results-driven diplomacy.
The programme, hosted by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwah, was held under the theme “Harnessing the Dividends of Diplomacy for Ghana’s Reset Agenda.”
During the event, President John Dramani Mahama charged the new envoys to project an image of Ghana grounded in economic diplomacy, integrity, professionalism, efficiency, and service.
He stressed that foreign missions must now operate with clear economic targets guided by the newly launched KPIs, ensuring measurable outcomes in line with the Reset Agenda.
The President also anchored Ghana’s foreign policy on the philosophy of Afro-Pragmatism, which prioritizes the pursuit of national interest while deepening constructive international partnerships.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang observed that this latest cohort of ambassadors and high commissioners will arguably be the most well-prepared in Ghana’s history*, undergoing rigorous training in economic diplomacy, international etiquette, and practical mission management.
This preparation, she noted, reflects the government’s determination to align diplomacy with Ghana’s broader transformation agenda.
She concluded that the orientation programme and KPI framework underscore the administration’s vision to reposition diplomacy as a strategic driver of economic growth—focusing on trade, investment, innovation, and improved service to Ghanaians both at home and abroad.
