Kukurantumi police station shut down after youth attack over suspect’s death

The Ghana Police Service has temporarily closed down the Kukurantumi Police Station in the Eastern Region after angry youth launched an attack on the facility, leaving officers with no option but to withdraw.

In a statement signed by Supt. George Peprah Mills of the Eastern Regional Police Command, the police explained that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) directed the immediate closure and withdrawal of personnel following violent scenes in Kukurantumi on Sunday, September 21, 2025.

“Some youth in Kukurantumi attacked the Kukurantumi Police Station and the barracks with stones, clubs and other implements and attempted to set the building on fire,” the statement said.

The chaos erupted after the death of a suspect, Bright Kena, also known as “D-ball,” who had been arrested over unlawful entry and stealing. Police confirmed that he died while receiving treatment at the Community Hospital in Kukurantumi.

According to the police, the attack, which began around 7:00 a.m., forced the deployment of a reinforcement team to restore calm. “A police reinforcement team which was called in managed to restore calm, law and order,” the release stated.

The Command further noted that it has engaged the deceased’s family and community leaders to assure them of a thorough investigation.

“The Police Professional Standards Bureau and the Criminal Investigations Department have commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death of the suspect,” the police explained.

The statement also revealed that video footage of the attack is under review, with authorities promising to track down the perpetrators.

“The perpetrators will be identified, arrested and brought to justice,” it assured.
