Kwabena Agyapong urges Mahama to defy party pressure and focus on legacy

Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ing. Kwabena Agyapong, has advised President John Dramani Mahama to remain focused on doing what is right for the country, despite internal political pressures.

Speaking in a recent interview on Wontumi TV, Agyapong stressed the importance of legacy over loyalty. “As President, it’s essential to resist pressures and do what’s right,” he said, cautioning against being swayed by party loyalists whose interests may not align with the broader national good.

His comments come at a time when the presidency faces public scrutiny over ongoing controversies, including the petition to remove the Chief Justice. For Agyapong, the true test of leadership lies in standing firm during difficult moments and choosing principle over convenience.

President Mahama, meanwhile, has reiterated his commitment to integrity and transparency in governance.

Speaking during a national address marking his first 120 days in office, the President declared his anti-corruption drive as a two-pronged approach—recovering misappropriated funds from past officials and holding current appointees to account.

“As promised, my commitment to fighting corruption is not limited to recovering loot from past appointees. We will also ensure that our own appointees serve Ghanaians responsibly and are held to the highest standards of accountability,” Mahama said.

He also addressed a long-standing concern about public officials purchasing state assets, stating that his government’s code of conduct now explicitly forbids such practices.

“Public trust has been eroded because appointees have always been purchasing state assets after they have served in office,” he noted.

The President assured Ghanaians that the new policy prevents any direct or indirect acquisition of public property by serving government officials.
