I used my own money to win my seat – A Plus clarifies funding rumours

Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, has dismissed widespread rumours suggesting that his successful 2024 parliamentary campaign was financed by Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, the former flagbearer aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The former Ghanaian musician firmly denied receiving any financial assistance from the outspoken Assin Central MP, insisting that his victory was self-funded and grounded in his personal efforts.

“I gave Kennedy Agyapong more money for his primaries and I mobilised a lot of resources for him. Even the GJA President, Albert Dwomfuor, has admitted that I contributed significantly to his campaign for the GJA presidency.

“I speak from my pocket, and I used my own money to win my seat. Kennedy Agyapong is my friend, but he had no hand in funding my campaign,” he clarified during a panel discussion on UTV.

A Plus’s comments come on the heels of persistent rumours that Kennedy Agyapong played a major role in financing his campaign, especially after the independent candidate’s remarkable victory in the December 7, 2024 parliamentary elections.

A Plus made history by unseating the incumbent MP and Deputy Minister for the Interior, Naana Eyiah Quansah of the NPP, in what many described as one of the most closely watched contests in the Central Region.

Official results from the Electoral Commission show that A Plus secured 14,277 votes, defeating Naana Eyiah Quansah, who garnered 11,637 votes, while the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Yawson Mohamed, came third with 10,112 votes out of a total of 36,026 valid votes cast.
