Wontumi urges caution on misinformation amid NPP tensions

Chairman Wontumi has pushed back against remarks by the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, defending his recent statements as strategic contributions rather than controversial outbursts.
The Ashanti Regional Chairman rejected Kodua’s claim that his comments did not reflect the party’s official position.
He maintained that his remarks were aimed at helping the NPP prepare effectively for the 2028 general elections under Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s leadership.
“My role as Ashanti Regional Chairman keeps me close to the grassroots, where people share with me their expectations about the future direction of the party,” he explained, stressing that his contributions stem from his interactions with party supporters, not personal ambition or malice.
Drawing on history, Wontumi referenced former President John Agyekum Kufuor’s political journey to highlight the importance of early planning, arguing that Dr. Bawumia would need about a nine percent advantage to secure victory in 2028.
But his strongest message was a caution against the dangers of misinformation in the digital age.
Wontumi warned that artificial intelligence (AI) can easily be exploited to twist narratives, urging party leaders to verify information before issuing public responses.
“In this era where saboteurs can easily use tools such as AI to distort messages, it would have been more prudent for Justin Frimpong Kodua to seek clarification before issuing a public statement,” he said on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem program, adding that carelessness in this area could fuel division and confusion within the party.
