Mahama can’t finish it in three years

Hon Asenso Boakye has cast doubt on the Mahama administration’s ability to complete the Accra–Kumasi Expressway as outlined in the 2026 Budget under the Big Push programme.

Speaking on Sompa FM monitored by MyNewsGh, he argued that the scale and history of the project make the government’s three-year completion timeline unrealistic.

“The Expressway is a major project that would certainly augur well for motorists and pedestrians,” he said, adding that he does not believe the current administration can finish it within its stated timeframe.

According to him, the project dates back to the era of former President John Agyekum Kufuor, yet it remains unfinished after multiple governments.

He recalled that “President Kufuor wanted a dual carriage that would make travel faster and easier.” However, he said the NDC, under the late Professor John Evans Atta Mills and later John Dramani Mahama, “never attempted to finish it” after taking over.

Asenso Boakye noted that when President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo assumed office, he made efforts to move the project forward.

“He tried to do something about it by making it four lanes under an overpass to accelerate its completion,” he said, adding that the overpass stretch extended to 46 kilometres.

He criticised the current administration for initiating a fresh plan instead of continuing what the NPP started.

“The NDC government says they are starting a different project on their own, which will make it six lanes,” he said. “That is why I feel they should have completed the previous one. It is why I doubt if they can truly finish their new road.”

To him, Ghana’s limited resources must be used more wisely. “Resources are limited, so they should not be used to start new projects but to complete existing ones,” he stressed.
