Mahama Cares bill gets cabinet approval, heads to Parliament

Cabinet has approved the Mahama Cares Bill, a major step toward the creation of a national fund aimed at easing the financial burden on Ghanaians battling life-threatening chronic illnesses.

President John Dramani Mahama confirmed the approval during a donation event in Accra, where security agencies contributed over GH¢1 million to support the initiative.

The bill, officially known as the Ghana Medical Trust Fund Bill, seeks to establish the Mahama Cares Fund—a social intervention program designed to provide direct financial assistance to patients suffering from chronic non-communicable diseases such as cancer, kidney failure, diabetes, and heart conditions.

Funding for the initiative will come from uncapped portions of the National Health Insurance Levy, government budget allocations, and private or donor contributions.

Once passed by Parliament, the fund will be managed by an independent board of trustees to ensure transparency and proper oversight.
