Mahama has abandoned his promise to women – PNP slams CJ removal move

The People’s National Party (PNP) has accused President John Dramani Mahama of abandoning his commitment to women’s empowerment, following reports that he is considering the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo.

In a statement signed by PNP Chairperson Janet Nabla, the party expressed disappointment, arguing that Mahama’s focus on ousting key officials—rather than fulfilling his campaign promises—undermines his credibility.

“His pledge to implement the Affirmative Action Law and ensure 30% representation of women in his government has been abandoned. Instead of delivering on his promise, he is actively seeking ways to remove those who were there before his tenure,” the statement read.

The controversy follows three petitions submitted to Mahama, urging him to remove Justice Torkonoo from office.

The president subsequently referred the three petitions to the Council of State for consultation, in line with Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution.

A statement from the Presidency’s Communications Directorate on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, confirmed that the petitions, submitted by various individuals, have been forwarded for review.

While details of the petitions remain undisclosed, the move initiates a constitutional process that could lead to further scrutiny of the Chief Justice’s tenure.

The Council of State is now tasked with advising the President on the next steps before any official action can be considered.
