Mahama moves to fully integrate UGMC into University of Ghana

President John Dramani Mahama has announced a major shift in Ghana’s healthcare and academic landscape with the inauguration of a transitional management committee to oversee the formal integration of the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) into the direct operational control of the University of Ghana.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, President Mahama explained that the move marks a critical next step in the evolution of UGMC from a standalone facility to a fully harmonised part of the university’s academic and research ecosystem.

“The next phase of our vision calls for the full integration of UGMC into the University of Ghana’s governance and operational structures,” the President stated.

“This is not a mere administrative action. It is a strategic alignment designed to promote synergy between clinical service delivery, teaching and research.”

He emphasized that the integration is intended to improve institutional efficiency through harmonised leadership, shared resources, and deeper interdisciplinary collaboration.

“It will encourage inter-disciplinary collaboration between medical professionals, researchers and academics, and most importantly, create a truly world-class teaching hospital that serves the needs of Ghana and the wider West African sub-region,” Mahama noted.
