Mahama must prove he’s serious by disciplining Sammy Gyamfi – Effah Dartey

Private legal practitioner and politician, Captain (Rtd) Nkrabea Effah Dartey, has joined the chorus of voices calling for disciplinary action against the National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, over his recent dollar gift to Nana Agradaa.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, the former military officer criticized Sammy Gyamfi — who also serves as the Acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board — for what he described as a “needless” and “inappropriate” gesture.

He argued that Gyamfi’s actions challenge the credibility of President John Mahama’s commitment to enforcing the Code of Conduct for public appointees.

“Sammy Gyamfi wants to test the President on the Code of Conduct and see whether the campaign promises were serious or just a nine-day wonder,” Effah Dartey said.

He maintained that the president must take swift action to demonstrate that his administration will not tolerate behavior that undermines public trust or economic stability.

“Anyone who hears this knows Sammy Gyamfi’s action is unacceptable. The President must punish him and set an example for others,” he stated.

Despite a public apology from Sammy Gyamfi and a reported summons by Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, Effah Dartey expressed doubt about whether there would be meaningful consequences, considering Gyamfi’s influence within the NDC.

“Given his role and importance in the NDC, whether the President will act is another matter. If nothing happens, then the Code of Conduct is just a paper policy, and the President will not be taken seriously,” he warned.

He acknowledged human imperfection but insisted that accountability is essential to good governance.

“We are all fallible, but that’s why laws and punishment exist—to guide and correct us. If someone like Sammy Gyamfi, who hasn’t even been made a minister, can flout rules this way, and nothing is done, then what message are we sending?”

The incident, which has gone viral, captured Gyamfi handing what Nana Agradaa claimed was an $800 fuel gift.
