Mahama unveils modern rice mill in North East Region

President John Dramani Mahama has announced the construction of a modern rice mill in Jadima, in the Mamprugu Moagduri District of the North East Region—an initiative aimed at transforming Ghana’s agricultural sector from “subsistence to sustainability.”

Speaking during a durbar of Chiefs and People in Nalerigu as part of his regional “Thank You” tour, Mahama described the project, which is in collaboration with the World Food Programme (WFP), as a game-changer for local farmers and the entire economy.

“This rice mill is not just a factory,” Mahama declared. “It is a symbol of hope, a signal of change, and a tool for empowerment.”

He emphasized the importance of value addition in agriculture, pointing out the missed opportunities that have long affected farmers in Ghana.

“Our farmers work hard, but for too long, they’ve lacked the systems to add value to their produce. This facility will ensure their efforts are rewarded.”

Mahama also promised a major policy shift to support the local rice industry.

“I have instructed the Buffer Stock Company to purchase all the rice produced from this mill,” he revealed.

“We will pay for it and use it to feed our children in senior high schools across the country.

“This is how we create a complete local value chain—from the farmer’s field to the dining halls.”

The initiative, he said, would reduce post-harvest losses, curb youth migration, and boost rural livelihoods.

“We will drastically reduce post-harvest losses, and more importantly, keep the profits here in Ghana,” Mahama affirmed.

“This will not only boost incomes for farmers but also improve livelihoods, reduce youth migration, and foster stability in this part of the country.”
