Majority rejects Nyindam’s presence in Parliament after court annuls Kpandai election

The Majority in Parliament is insisting that Matthew Nyindam be barred from the chamber after a High Court ruling in Tamale nullified the December 7, 2024, parliamentary election results for the Kpandai constituency.
The dispute erupted when Mr Nyindam reportedly prepared to contribute to proceedings during Tuesday’s sitting. Majority Chief Whip, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, rose immediately to oppose his participation, citing the court’s decision.
“Mr. Speaker, the High Court in Tamale has ordered that the outcome of the December 7, 2024, election, which brought Honourable Nyindam to this House as the MP for Kpandai, was flawed,” he said.
“Therefore, that election has been ordered to be rerun. Ipso facto, the Honourable Nyindam is no longer a member of this House.”
Dafeamekpor argued that the legal consequences of the ruling have already taken effect despite attempts by Nyindam to challenge the judgment.
“The mere filing of an appeal or a stay of execution does not operate to stop the judgment of the court,” he added.
“We will not allow Nyindam to continuously carry himself as an MP, and we will not allow him to speak.”
Raising concerns about parliamentary integrity, he stressed that the chamber must uphold the authority of the courts.
“Mr. Speaker, these are very serious matters,” he said. “He cannot enter the chamber and even attempt to debate.”
The Majority maintains that until the ordered rerun is conducted and a new MP is validly elected, Matthew Nyindam cannot take part in parliamentary business.
