Belgium international and Manchester City winger Jérémy Baffour Doku has officially received his first Ghanaian passport, affirming his personal and emotional connection to his country of origin.
This symbolic gesture, facilitated by Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, marks a significant chapter in Doku’s journey of dual identity and cultural reconnection.
The announcement was made by Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who took to Facebook on Monday to share the news.
“Jérémy Baffour Doku receives a Ghanaian passport for the first time.
“This was the wish of Jérémy and his family when they called on me last week — glad we successfully delivered chip-embedded passports today,” the Minister wrote.
He added that as a dual citizen, Doku is legally entitled to a Ghanaian passport, and emphasized the personal significance of the moment for the 22-year-old.
“This significant development confirms Jérémy Baffour Doku’s commitment to fully reconnect with Ghana despite playing for Belgium. I wish him the very best in his illustrious career,” Ablakwa concluded.
Jérémy Doku was born on May 27, 2002, in Antwerp, Belgium to Ghanaian parents.
A prodigious talent from a young age, he rose through the youth ranks at Anderlecht before signing for French side Rennes in 2020.
In 2023, he secured a high-profile move to English champions Manchester City, where his speed, agility, and skill have earned him widespread praise.
Internationally, Doku has represented Belgium at various youth levels and is now a senior international for the Red Devils.
However, his Ghanaian heritage has always remained a crucial part of his identity — a connection now symbolically and legally sealed with his newly acquired Ghanaian passport.
