Man drowns in Kasoa floods as drainage concerns resurface

N.K. Godfred, a man believed to be in his early thirties, drowned on Saturday evening after falling into a flooded drain in the Ironcity area of Kasoa during a heavy downpour.
According to eyewitnesses, Godfred was returning home from work when he attempted to cross an open gutter despite warnings from bystanders.
He was quickly swept away by strong currents. His body was discovered on Sunday afternoon in another part of the community.
“He underestimated the situation. Some people tried to help, but the water was too strong,” a relative told Channel One News.
The incident has reignited concerns over poor drainage in Ironcity. Residents say they have complained for years without any meaningful intervention.
“We’ve raised it repeatedly, but nothing has been done. We’re pleading with the MCE and authorities to act before more lives are lost,” a resident said.
NADMO Director for Awutu Senya East, Nash Nyandey, noted that illegal structures have been identified as contributing to the flooding and promised that engineers will be brought in to assess the situation and propose solutions.
Municipal Chief Executive Seth Sabah Serwonoo Banini said buildings obstructing water flow will be demolished as part of measures to address the issue.
“We will not hesitate to pull down any building obstructing water flow. This is about protecting lives, not politics,” he said.
