Man sentenced to 19 years for robbery at knifepoint

A knife-point robbery targeting a pregnant woman in Ho has ended with a 19-year prison sentence for the main suspect, Paul Avortide, also known as “Tinted.”

The case, which drew attention in May, began when Avortide attacked the victim, Ogechi Chidiebere, around 4:00 a.m. on May 21, 2025, as she was on her way to the Ho Municipal Hospital for antenatal care.

Armed with a machete, he made away with GH¢3,000 and her Tecno Spark 30c phone, worth GH¢2,500.

Weeks later, on June 19, police made a breakthrough by arresting 23-year-old Harmony Nbonu—popularly called “Arab Money”—at the Ho Main Market.

He was found with the stolen phone and admitted buying it from Avortide for GH¢850.

Acting on that lead, police tracked and arrested Avortide at Matse, a suburb of Ho.

The Volta Regional Police Command handled the investigation, which led to swift prosecution.

Appearing before the Ho Circuit Court, Avortide pleaded guilty to robbery under Section 149 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), as amended.

The court, presided over by Judge Osman Abdul Hakeem, sentenced him to 19 years of hard labour.

Nbonu, on the other hand, faces a separate charge of dishonestly receiving under Section 146 of the same Act.
