Man swept away by floodwaters at Agbogba found dead

The body of an unidentified man believed to be in his mid-50s was retrieved from a storm drain near Transition at Agbogba in the Ga East Municipality on Monday, following heavy rains that lashed Accra on Sunday.
The three-hour downpour caused severe flooding across multiple parts of the capital, resulting in four confirmed deaths.
According to Mr. Dennis Mensah, Assemblyman for the Agbogba Electoral Area, the deceased was swept away by the floods while riding a bicycle during the rain.
He said the man ignored community members who warned him to stop due to the rising water levels.
“Actually, they were two, but the other one survived. A private security officer was not lucky, and so we lost him,” Mr. Mensah told the Ghana News Agency (GNA).
He said efforts were made by some residents to rescue the victim, but they were unsuccessful. His body was later found in a nearby drain.
The three other fatalities were reported in the Adentan Municipality, specifically at Lakeside, Nanakrom, and New Legon.
Mr. Mensah, visibly shocked by the extent of the flooding, blamed the situation on unregulated construction on waterways that blocked the natural flow of water.
“Since I became an assemblyman, I’ve not witnessed this type of flood before. It used to come, but this one is too much,” he said.
Mr. John Kofi Dediha, a resident, attributed the flooding in part to indiscriminate waste disposal, which he said chokes drainage channels and worsens flooding.
He called on residents to act more responsibly to prevent such disasters in the future.
Some residents also appealed to the government to expedite work on the stalled storm drain project at Happy Home to help mitigate future flood risks.
