Manageress jailed five years for stealing over GH¢221,000 from lotto company

The Asante Abuakwa Circuit Court has sentenced a 38-year-old manageress to five years in prison for stealing GH¢221,937.75 from FOE Lotto Limited at Santasi in Kumasi.
Akua Darkoah Asamoah pleaded guilty to the charge of stealing and was convicted on her own plea, GNA reports.
Presenting the facts, Police Detective Inspector Alexander Agbekpornu told the court, presided over by Mr. Jephthah Appau, that the complainant is the General Manager of FOE Lotto Limited, a subsidiary of Lotto and Lotteries, based at Santasi. The convict served as the manageress of the company’s Atwima-Techiman branch.
Inspector Agbekpornu explained that between March 22 and June 2, 2024, Akua Darkoah Asamoah diverted lotto sales funds collected from sub-agents, which were meant to be remitted to the company’s head office in Kumasi.
The total amount misappropriated amounted to GH¢221,937.75.
Following the discovery, a complaint was lodged with the Suntreso Police, leading to her arrest. In her caution statement, she admitted to the offence.
The prosecution revealed that a forensic audit uncovered further fraudulent activities. After the announcement of winning numbers, the convict forged lotto tickets to falsely claim winnings in a bid to conceal the theft.
Subsequent investigations led to her being charged and arraigned before the court, where she was convicted and sentenced.
