Manhunt ongoing for alleged kingpin behind Sapeiman counterfeit syndicate

A manhunt is still ongoing for the alleged mastermind behind a sophisticated counterfeiting syndicate busted in Sapeiman, a suburb of Accra, in February.

Richard Jakpa, Director of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat, shared this update during an exclusive tour of the crime scene.

The operation uncovered overwhelming evidence, including ten 40-foot containers filled with counterfeit Ghana cedi and US dollars.

However, two containers were moved just before the bust. In a shocking twist, several genuine Bank of Ghana (BoG) money boxes were also discovered at the site, raising questions about how they ended up in the hands of the criminals.

Investigators found a modest uncompleted building that served as the main front for the illegal operation.

At the entrance, an elderly man, known as the “Battery Doctor,” ran a battery-charging service to deflect suspicion. Inside, authorities found stacks of counterfeit notes in various denominations and fake gold bars, some peeling to reveal silver beneath.

Jakpa confirmed the syndicate was highly organized and led by a figure known only as “Alhaji,” who remains at large. National Security operatives continue to track his movements.
