Lawyer Martin Kpebu says the conduct of Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng amounts to aiding former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to evade accountability.
In an interview on the KSM Show monitored by MyNewsGh, Kpebu alleged that the OSP’s handling of ongoing corruption cases has raised “serious suspicion” and undermined public trust.
Kpebu stated that Agyebeng confirmed he could not stop Ofori-Atta from leaving the country despite multiple active cases.
“From his own confession, he has aided a suspect to run away,” Kpebu said. “This is the most valuable suspect, and he couldn’t raise an alarm.”
He criticised the OSP’s failure to act at the airport. “OSP has police powers. A policeman sees a suspect running and he can call the community for help,” he said.
“How could he not shout? How could he not blow the whistle?”
Kpebu argued that the delay in securing court orders or preventive measures has left Ghanaians unsure of the status of Ofori-Atta’s assets.
“Because he didn’t go to court early, you and I don’t know whether, in the meantime, Ofori-Atta has succeeded in selling the shares in Databank or Enterprise Insurance,” he said. “We are left in the dark.”
He also accused Agyebeng of halting the arrest of a former Scholarship Secretariat official. “They were about to arrest Kinsley, and Kissi stopped them on grounds of friendship,” he said. “We have the tapes, and the witnesses will testify.”
Kpebu dismissed claims by the OSP that he ignored 15 calls for information. “There were no 15 calls. My office is a 15-minute walk,” he said. “I’m not under investigation, so what am I running from?”
He argued that the pattern of actions fits a broader concern about conflict of interest. “He worked for people who were very powerful in the previous government,” Kpebu said.
“It raises suspicion that these charges are a ploy to allow people to escape free.”
“The environment has become toxic,” he added. “We need new management. This is for Ghana.”
