Matilda Asante-Asiedu’s remarkable career journey

Mrs. Matilda Asante-Asiedu, the newly appointed Second Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, exemplifies the modern, multi-skilled corporate leader — blending deep expertise in retail banking, marketing communications, governmental relations, and journalism into a distinguished career marked by impact and innovation.
A Chartered Banker with a proven record of success, Mrs. Asante-Asiedu most recently served as Group Head of Retail Banking at Access Bank Ghana PLC. In this role, she provided strategic leadership across Retail, MSME, High Net-Worth, and Inclusive Banking, driving growth among traditionally underserved segments, particularly women and the unbanked.
Since 2015, she has championed Access Bank’s award-winning financial inclusion program for women, the “W Initiative,” a groundbreaking strategy that has garnered international recognition, including the 2023 World Economic Magazine Award for Best Bank for Women Entrepreneurs. Her leadership in this area has not only expanded financial access but also strengthened economic empowerment for women across Ghana.
Throughout her tenure at Access Bank, Mrs. Asante-Asiedu held several key leadership positions. As Head of Exclusive Banking, she led strategic business development for high-profile clients including embassies, NGOs, and private banking customers.
Earlier, as Head of Corporate Communications and Branding from 2010 to 2015, she successfully managed the bank’s reputation, community investments, and sustainability initiatives, earning numerous awards for Corporate Social Responsibility.
Before transitioning into banking, Mrs. Asante-Asiedu made her mark in journalism. As head of JOYNEWS, Ghana’s leading news brand, she played a pivotal role in shaping public discourse during the nation’s critical transition to multiparty constitutional rule.
Her communication skills later extended to consulting for global organizations such as the World Bank and DFID UK, advising on strategic communications.
Academically accomplished, she holds an MBA in Marketing from the GIMPA Business School and an MA in Journalism Studies from Cardiff University.
Her pursuit of lifelong learning also led her through executive programs at prestigious institutions including the Said Business School at Oxford University, the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and Marquette University’s Les Aspin Centre for Government. She is a Chartered Executive Banker with CIB-Ghana and currently serves as an adjunct lecturer at the UPSA School of Graduate Studies, where she continues to mentor future leaders.
Beyond her corporate and academic roles, Mrs. Asante-Asiedu is a respected conference speaker, regularly sharing insights on MSME financing, digital banking, financial inclusion, women’s empowerment, and media ethics.
Her appointment as Second Deputy Governor signals a bold, future-focused vision for the Bank of Ghana, with her deep cross-sector experience expected to enhance innovation, inclusion, and integrity in the country’s financial sector.
