Military alone won’t fix Bawku conflict – Dr. Antwi-Danso

Dr. Vladimir Antwi-Danso has cautioned that military and police deployments alone will not resolve the long-standing conflict in Bawku, urging stakeholders to look beyond force and address the deeper issues sustaining the unrest.
The Renowned security and international relations expert emphasised that the conflict is complex and rooted in historical, social, and political factors that must be acknowledged and addressed. “…military presence, police presence in their numbers will not solve the problem,” he stated in an interview on Channel One Newsroom.
“There are several pillars propping up the conflict. It could be history that has not been properly related, and we’re adding on and twisting history.”
He further pointed to multiple drivers of the conflict, including misinformation, political interference, and poor communication within communities.
“It may be the media—the way we handle it. It may be the people themselves or intra-community miscommunication. It could be politics,” he explained.
According to Dr. Antwi-Danso, resolving the conflict requires a strategic effort to remove each contributing factor. “So until you remove these props one by one for the conflict triangle to fall, you have done nothing. So using the military often is only a stopgap,” he warned.
