Minister announces plans to reclassify SHS schools to address CSSPS challenges

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has revealed plans by the government to reclassify some senior high schools across Ghana to promote fairness in the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS).

Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday, October 14, the Minister explained that the reclassification aims to ease pressure on a few elite schools and ensure equitable access to quality education across all regions.

“My thinking, in order that we respect equity, will be that in 2026, and I’ve had consultations and discussions with the President, who has given his support and blessing, is to convert at least 10 Category A schools to Category B schools,” he announced.

He further disclosed that the plan includes upgrading 10 Category B schools to Category A status, with corresponding improvements in infrastructure and teaching quality.

“That will be backed with infrastructure, with available classroom blocks, dormitories for students, and quality improvement by way of teaching and learning materials,” he stated.

Mr. Iddrisu emphasized that the reclassification will help balance opportunities for students nationwide and address the recurring frustrations associated with school placements.

“Not until you do that, you will struggle, as I’m struggling, to deal equitably with the matter of placement,” he admitted.
