Minister of Sports offers condolences following death of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Olanrewaju

Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams, Minister of Sports and Recreation for the Republic of Ghana, has extended heartfelt condolences following the tragic death of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju.

Gabriel passed away after competing in an eight-round international light-heavyweight contest at the Bukom Boxing Arena against Ghanaian boxer Jon Mbanugu.

In a press release on March 31, 2025, Hon. Adams expressed deep sorrow on behalf of the Ministry and the Government of Ghana, stating, “It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that we mourn the loss of Gabriel, a talented athlete who showed exceptional passion and courage in the ring.”

The Minister also expressed empathy for the Nigerian Boxing Board of Control (NBBC) and the entire Nigerian boxing community, acknowledging the impact of Gabriel’s untimely passing. “Gabriel’s departure not only leaves a void in boxing but also serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of the sport we all cherish,” Hon. Adams noted.

While awaiting the official medical report, the Ministry, in collaboration with the Ghana Boxing Authority, has pledged to fully support investigations into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

“We will cooperate fully to ensure a thorough investigation and work towards enhancing the safety of our athletes,” the statement assured.

Hon. Adams concluded with words of solidarity: “Our thoughts and prayers are with Gabriel’s family and the boxing community during this difficult time. May Gabriel’s soul rest in peace.”
