Minority demands immediate reversal of new utility tariff increases

The Minority Caucus in Parliament has mounted fresh pressure on the government to withdraw the recently announced increases in water and electricity tariffs, describing them as unfair, excessive, and economically burdensome.
Addressing journalists at a press conference on Monday, December 8, the Ranking Member on Parliament’s Energy Committee, George Kwame Aboagye, said the Minority will not relent in defending consumers already grappling with rising living costs.
Aboagye stressed that the Caucus is united in its opposition to the tariff hikes, insisting that the government’s decision is out of touch with the hardships facing ordinary citizens.
“We call on the government to immediately halt these incessant increases,” he said. “The minority stands firmly with Ghanaian workers, households, small businesses, and industries struggling to survive.”
He noted that the Caucus will fully deploy all available parliamentary procedures to ensure that utility pricing is fair and transparent.
“We will continue to use every legitimate parliamentary tool to demand fairness, transparency, and accountability in the management of the nation’s utilities,” he added. “Our position remains firm and non-negotiable.”
Aboagye further described the tariff adjustments as punitive, warning that they threaten economic stability and the survival of businesses.
“This tariff hike must be reversed immediately and measures must be taken to protect consumers and sustain businesses,” he said. “Ghanaians deserve relief, not repeated shocks. They deserve leadership, not exploitation.”
He concluded by reaffirming the Minority’s commitment to holding the government to account.
“And we, as the Minority Caucus, will continue to hold this government accountable and defend the rights of the people. Thank you, members of the press.”
