Minority mourns victims of military helicopter crash

The Minority Caucus in Parliament has issued a heartfelt statement following the tragic military helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight Ghanaians, including two cabinet ministers.

In a statement signed by Minority Leader Hon. Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin and released on August 6, 2025, the caucus expressed profound sorrow over what it described as a national tragedy, acknowledging the loss of “fathers, husbands, sons, and devoted patriots” who died in service to the country.

The crash claimed the lives of Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Hon. Dr. Alhaji Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Muniru Mohammed, former NDC parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, NDC National First Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong, and three military officers — Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Mane-Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

In the statement, Afenyo-Markin offered personal reflections on both ministers, describing Dr. Murtala Mohammed as a passionate environmentalist who engaged meaningfully across the political divide, and Dr. Omane Boamah as a patriot committed to modernising the Armed Forces.

“These personal losses remind us that behind every political position lies a human being — someone’s beloved family member, someone’s trusted friend,” the statement read.

The Minority also extended condolences to President Akufo-Addo, the Majority Caucus, the families of the deceased, and the entire nation, calling for unity in this time of grief.

“Let us honour these eight souls by supporting our Armed Forces, protecting Ghana’s environment, and working together for our nation’s security and prosperity,” Afenyo-Markin urged.

The crash, which occurred in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region, is being described as one of the most painful moments in Ghana’s recent history.
