A second protest to demand the resignation of Dr. Ernest Addison, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), and his two deputies has been alluded to by the Minority caucus in Parliament.
The caucus say it is imperative the governor who supervised “a great mess at the Central Bank is replaced with a more competent person.”
On October 3, 2023, members of the caucus protested, calling for the resignation of the governor and deputies of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) following the Bank’s GH¢60.81 billion deficit in the 2022 fiscal year and the allocation of over $250 million for the building of a new headquarters.
The protesters began at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle’s Obra Spot and marched to the National Theatre traffic light, the Ridge Roundabout, the High Court Complex traffic light, the Attah Mills Highway, and finally, they made a U-turn at the National Lottery Authority. Finally, they ended at Independence Square, where the leadership went to deliver a petition to the governor, who declined to meet with them in person and sent his head of security in their place.
After the protest proved unsuccessful, efforts were launched to set a new date that was postponed for almost a year.
Mahama Ayariga, the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, however, submitted a Right to Information Act (RTI) request, seeking details on the GHS 70 billion in total losses shown in the BoG’s financial accounts for 2022 and 2023.
Inquiries were also made into the more than GH¢250 million spent on the BoG’s new headquarters and a clinic that is now being built.
