Mishandled prosecutions could become major election issue — Kpebu warns

Legal analyst Martin Kpebu has warned that the government risks significant political fallout if it fails to address growing public anger over the handling of corruption-related prosecutions.

Speaking on TV3 as monitored by MyNewsGh, he said citizens across the political divide feel let down by controversial decisions to discontinue certain cases, arguing that perceived selective justice could influence electoral outcomes.

“This thing can become a big election issue,” he cautioned.

“The populace is not happy about withdrawals. Don’t underestimate Ghanaians, there is still anger around it.”

Kpebu suggested that the state should revisit high-profile investigations such as the Saglemi Housing project and demonstrate transparency by involving civil society.

“Let’s get to the bottom of the Saglemi case. That $280 million cannot go like that,” he insisted.

He further noted that the wealth accumulated by some political officeholders fuels public frustration and perceptions of impunity.

Without urgent corrective action, he warned, the situation could “boomerang into our faces.”
