Naana Opoku-Agyemang chairs first IMCC meeting, pledges stronger decentralisation

Vice President Jane Opoku-Agyemang has chaired the first meeting of the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Decentralization (IMCC) since her government assumed office, signaling a renewed focus on strengthening Ghana’s decentralized governance system.
Speaking on the significance of the Committee, the Vice President highlighted its critical role in coordinating inter-sectoral policies and advancing local governance reforms.
“Experience has shown that whenever this Committee has met regularly, our decentralization reforms have advanced significantly,” she said, citing the period between 2010 and 2016 when the IMCC resolved long-standing reform challenges dating back to 1989.
The meeting brought together sector ministers and representatives from key government agencies, including Health, Agriculture, Education, Finance, Local Government, and Gender.
The discussions focused on streamlining the workings of the IMCC and adopting strategic approaches to enhance the effectiveness of decentralisation reforms.
The Vice President emphasized the importance of the Committee’s collaborative approach.
“We deliberated on the key decentralisation reform agenda and the strategic approaches we will need to make our work effective,” she noted, underlining the commitment of her administration to systematic, well-coordinated local governance initiatives.
