National security operatives raid Maxwell Kofi Jumah’s home over state vehicles

Operatives from Ghana’s national security apparatus on Thursday, May 15, 2025, conducted a surprise operation at the residence of former GIHOC Distilleries Managing Director Maxwell Kofi Jumah to retrieve state-owned vehicles reportedly still in his possession.

The operation, which occurred around 5:00 a.m., took place while Mr. Jumah was reportedly absent from the premises.

Sources say the former government appointee, who served under ex-President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s administration, is under investigation for alleged financial impropriety during his tenure at the state-owned distillery company.

At the heart of the investigation is the questionable acquisition of a high-end Genesis G90 saloon car, initially valued at over $100,000. A letter from the GIHOC Board of Directors dated August 1, 2019, approved Mr. Jumah’s purchase of the vehicle under his Conditions of Service. However, documents reveal that the car was sold to him at just 5% of its estimated value—GHS 4,943.11.

According to a letter signed by GIHOC’s Secretary and Head of Administration, Apea Twumasi-Ankrah, the vehicle was a 2018 model with a 3,300cc engine, chassis number KMHG34JXJU039991, and had clocked 38,971 km. A technical assessment found the vehicle to be in good condition, with no prior maintenance issues.

An independent valuation conducted by the State Transport Company, however, put the car’s value at GHS 98,862.00. The appraisal was certified by Daniel K. Orhin (Certificate No. 0014073).

Investigators are also probing Mr. Jumah’s alleged retention of two additional official vehicles, including an Audi reportedly worth over $60,000, without formal authorization from the GIHOC Board.

Reports indicate that he later instructed his security personnel to return the vehicles, acknowledging that one had been in the possession of his son. So far, one of the vehicles has been retrieved and returned to Accra.

Mr. Jumah has not publicly responded to the allegations. The investigation is ongoing.
