NDC not done yet, EC boss may be next – Prof. Agyeman-Duah alleges

Former United Nations Senior Governance Adviser, Prof. Baffour Agyeman-Duah, has revealed that Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, and her two deputies, Dr. Eric Bossman Asare and Samuel Tettey, could be the next high-profile officials removed from office.
Prof. Agyeman-Duah claimed that a petition has already been submitted to President John Dramani Mahama, signaling the beginning of a process that may see the EC leadership ousted.
“In fact, yesterday [Tuesday], we were told that the NDC has not finished yet in terms of the people they intend to remove, and I guess it will be the Electoral Commissioners. I think a petition has already been sent to the President,” he disclosed.
The governance expert expressed concern that such moves risk politicising institutions that should remain neutral to safeguard Ghana’s democratic stability.
“You don’t have to politicise certain key institutions of governance so the people can continuously have trust and believe in the role that they play in a democracy,” he cautioned in an interview on JoyNews’ AM Show on Wednesday, September 3.
His comment comes days after President John Dramani Mahama removed Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkonoo from office with immediate effect.
In a statement signed by the Spokesperson to the President, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Presidency explained that the decision was made in line with Article 146(9) of the 1992 Constitution, which mandates the President to act upon the recommendations of a committee set up under Article 146.“
President John Dramani Mahama has, in accordance with Article 146(9) of the 1992 Constitution, removed the Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkonoo, from office with immediate effect,” the statement read.
