Nigeria to miss World Cup 2026 after defeat to DR Congo

Nigeria has failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup after failing to beat DR Congo in the playoffs that took place in Morocco.
The Super Eagles lost 3 – 4 on penalties after a one-all drawn game in open play.
Leopards captain Chancel Mbemba netted the crucial spot-kick after Timothy Fayulu had saved from Super Eagles defender Semi Ajayi in the sixth round of the shootout.
The Super Eagles had defeated Gabon 4-1 to reach this stage, while DR Congo pipped Cameroon.
Nigeria will now turn their attention to the 2025 AFCON, billed for Morocco next month.
For DR Congo, who last appeared at a World Cup in 1974 as Zaire, this marks another step in a resolute qualifying campaign built on defensive organisation and big moments in tight games.
They now advance to the inter-confederation play-off from 23–31 March 2026.
