Nigerian doctor commits suicide over $15k child support

A Nigerian doctor based in the US identified as Ikenna Erinne, has committed suicide after losing a court case to his ex-wife and also being told to pay an amount of $15,000 as child support.

According to a source, Dr Erinne a trained cardiologist had a prolonged divorce battle with his estranged wife, including the custody of their children. He, however, lost the case after a US court ruled in favour of his ex-wife and ordered him to pay a monthly child support of $15,000.

Clayton Udo, a Nigerian-American, said that the court’s decision caused him to suffer a great deal of financial hardship, which ultimately resulted in his untimely death.

He wrote, “The abùse of African men in the USA must come to an end. In a deeply troubling case, Dr. Ikenna Erinne, an American-trained cardiologist, allegedly took his own lìfe after an American court ordered him to pay his ex-wife $15,000 monthly, following a prolonged and contentious divorce case. This tragic incident highlights the systemic issues within the legal system that disproportionately affect African men.”

The deceased had paid thousands of dollars in legal bills before the court’s decision favoured his ex-wife, according to Udo, who claimed to be an authority in psychological and mental abuse.

He added that the late doctor died after shooting himself and that the case resulted in him losing his license as a cardiologist which made matters worse for him.

“He shòt himself to death. He spent thousands of dollars in legal fees – wasted money. I am talking about a process that impoverishes you. You go to court and they take all your money.

“He lost his license as a cardiologist in this case plus they slammed on him 15,000 dollars a month plus restricted access to his children,” he added.
